Brilliant, thoughtful mystery about a fellow and his pet bulldog who stumble upon someone terrorizing an sometime shopkeeper and a subconscious treasure. The boy is smarter than he thinks he is and Sinbad, his dog, truly is human being's all-time friend.

Sadly this serial is out of impress and *paperback* copies tin can get for up of $50 or more.

A childhood fave that I read over and over again -- but when I tried to detect a copy a few years ago and then my kids could read information technology, this classic turned out to be out of print. Fortunately some smart person finally made it available over again in a print-to-order version.

That'south the good news.

The bad news is that the editing on this edition wsa somewhat slapdash and there were several spots where the words were wrong. In other words, they passed muster with spellcheck but they were not the right words in that context. Fortunately I was reading the book aloud to my kids so I was able to grab and correct each instance.

The book tells the story of a child named Steve and his beloved bulldog Sinbad and how they stumble into a decades-old mystery. Before it's over they have to dodge mobsters, a ghost, an aroused sheriff, an inquisitive girl (the sheriff'south daughter) and a kooky former lady with a cane. They also solve several riddles and ciphers, well-nigh drown and avoid being poisoned, and find a fabulous treasure -- cheers to Steve's arcane knowledge of compages -- it's a hobby of his.

The architecture discussions, which I barely recall from when I was a kid, got a fiddling thick on the page at times, merely my kids hung in at that place and we were all well-rewarded when Steve figures out the mysteries. All in all, a rollicking adventure yarn, non quite as slap-up as I remember it merely still pretty darn expert.

This volume has remained one of my favorites since I first read it decades ago. It is an adventure/mystery novel, but it has a lot more that going on in it as the master characters Steve Forrester and his bulldog Sinbad work to find the answers to many interlinked mysterious events both past and present in his abode boondocks.

This book has remained 1 of my favorites since I kickoff read it decades ago. It is an take a chance/mystery novel, merely information technology has a lot more than than that going on in it every bit the main characters Steve Forrester and his bulldog Sinbad piece of work to observe the answers to many interlinked mysterious events both past and nowadays in his dwelling town.

The mystery at the heart of the story has a variety of puzzles that Steve must effigy out. There's a lot of information in the book that, while essential to the story, is still interesting to larn about, particularly in the areas of architecture and numismatics. Steve is a great lowest kind of hero; he doesn't solve all the riddles and puzzles himself, but still reaches the overall solution to the mysteries.

Ane note: This book was published in 1966 and therefore has some minor anachronisms that I have seen some people overreact to. In that twenty-four hour period and age, it would not have been remotely unusual for a xiii year old boy'south parents to get out of town to help a family unit member while leaving their son and his bulldog at dwelling so the son could attend summer school, especially when they were living in a modest town and were good friends with the local Sheriff. Take the story for what information technology is, a nifty tale told from the perspective of an average xiii year quondam, with swell characters, great adventures, and the best bulldog ever!

This has got to be ane of the top-x books I have ever read in my life. Kin Platt has that rare souvenir of being able to guide an adult reader through what is ostensibly a YA volume without insulting the reader's intelligence, while at the same time challenging the reader with a ripping proficient yarn and a keen detective mystery. I'm amazed this was never fabricated into a movie, and that it has not been republished. If Hollywood were smart, they'd buy the moving picture rights and get moving on this correct away.
